Keep looking towards the hilltops as you head to Chadayamangalam to catch a fleeting view of the legendary bird Jatayu’s craning head and a portion of his large wing. It is only the slightest hint of what’s to come atop Jatayu para (rock) or Jatayu Earth’s Centre where the idol of the gigantic mythical bird lies splayed. The idol is a homage to the bird’s sacrifice to defend Sita from Ravana. Carved out of the rock by the multi-faceted sculptor Rajiv Anchal, it is the world's largest bird sculpture. Once there, you can choose the nature of your trip - adventure, rejuvenation or a bout of the outdoors.
Take a cable car ride to see the magnificent bird or climb all 826 steps through the mountain, else opt for some team-building adventure by navigating the Burma bridges, commando nets, log walks, climbing up chimneys or walls, or go glamping at Elephant Hill, listening to lilting music and treating yourself to soul-satisfying food. If healing is what you seek, opt for the seven-day rejuvenation package at the Siddha Healing Caves where comfortable cottages await to host you.
